FOR LESS-THAN-CONTAINER LOAD (LCL) SHIPMENTS, FREIGHT CHARGES ARE TYPICALLY CALCULATED BASED ON EITHER VOLUME OR WEIGHT, ACCORDING TO THE REVENUE TONS (RT)PRINCIPLE. QUOTATIONS ARE GENERALLY PROVIDED PER CUBIC FOOT (CUFT) OR PER CUBIC METER (CBM). THEREFORE, CALCULATING THE TOTAL VOLUME OF YOUR CARGO IS THE ESSENTIAL FIRST STEP IN DETERMINING YOUR SHIPPING COSTS.
BY MEASURING THE LENGTH, WIDTH, AND HEIGHT OF YOUR PACKAGING, YOU CAN EASILY CALCULATE THE TOTAL VOLUME USING THE FOLLOWING FORMULAS:

FREIGHT TERMINOLOGY: WHAT ARE CUFT AND CBM?
CUFT AND CBM ARE UNITS OF VOLUME COMMONLY USED IN AIR AND OCEAN FREIGHT TO DETERMINE SHIPPING FEES BASED ON THE SPACE CARGO OCCUPIES.
1 CUFT (CUBIC FOOT): REPRESENTS ONE CUBIC FOOT OF SPACE.
1 CBM (CUBIC METER): REPRESENTS ONE CUBIC METER (M3).
CONVERSION: 1 CUFT IS APPROXIMATELY 0.028 CBM, WHILE 1 CBM IS EQUAL TO 35.315 CUFT.
ESTIMATED CONTAINER CAPACITY: 20-FOOT CONTAINER: APPROXIMATELY 26–28 CBM (918–988 CUFT). 40-FOOT CONTAINER: APPROXIMATELY 56–58 CBM (1,977–2,048 CUFT).

Express Delivery
- VOLUMETRIC DIVISOR: FOR INTERNATIONAL EXPRESS, THE DIVISOR IS 5,000; FOR DOMESTIC EXPRESS, THE DIVISOR IS 6,000.
- FREIGHT WEIGHT CALCULATION: CHARGEABLE WEIGHT IS DETERMINED BY COMPARING THE ACTUAL WEIGHT WITH THE VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT, WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
- DETERMINING ACTUAL WEIGHT: WEIGH THE PACKAGE ON A SCALE TO ASCERTAIN ITS WEIGHT. IF MULTIPLE PACKAGES HAVE IDENTICAL DIMENSIONS, THE TOTAL CHARGEABLE WEIGHT FOR THE ENTIRE SHIPMENT SHALL BE AGGREGATED.HOWEVER, IF PACKAGES HAVE DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS, EACH BOX MUST BE WEIGHED INDIVIDUALLY; THE CHARGEABLE WEIGHT FOR EACH BOX WILL BE THE GREATER OF ITS ACTUAL VS. VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT, AND THESE INDIVIDUAL VALUES WILL THEN BE SUMMED UP.
FOR WEIGHTS LESS THAN 1 KG, THE FRACTION WILL BE ROUNDED UP TO THE NEXT FULL KILOGRAM. FOR EXAMPLE, 3.3 KG WILL BE CALCULATED AS 4 KG, AND 28.8 KG WILL BE CALCULATED AS 29 KG. - MEASUREMENT STANDARDS: WHEN USING PRE-LABELED BOXES, SUCH AS 10×6×6, IF THE MEASURED HEIGHT IS ACTUALLY 6.25, IT MUST BE ROUNDED UP TO 7, MAKING THE CALCULATED DIMENSIONS 10×6×7. IF THE BOX IS OVERFILLED AND BULGING, THE DIMENSIONS WILL BE CALCULATED BASED ON THE MOST PROTRUDING POINTS OF THE PACKAGE.
