The cost of shipping from China to the USA is not a single price per kilogram or per container. It is the combined cost of collecting the goods, preparing the shipment, moving it internationally, clearing it and delivering it to your receiving location. A low port-to-port rate can become an expensive purchase if the quote leaves out destination handling or assumes a delivery arrangement your warehouse cannot accept.
For a useful comparison, give every forwarder the same cargo details, collection address, delivery ZIP code and required delivery date. Then compare the total logistics cost and the point at which each provider's responsibility ends. This guide focuses on commercial imports, with clearly identified hypothetical examples rather than advertised spot rates.
Choose between express, air freight, LCL and FCL
Comparison table · Scroll horizontally on smaller screens
| Option | A practical use case | What to establish before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Express courier | Small urgent orders, samples or replacement parts | Package limits, dimensional weight, customs services and delivery exclusions |
| Air freight | Urgent commercial replenishment or high-value cargo | Airport versus door delivery, chargeable weight and cargo acceptance |
| LCL ocean freight | Shipments that share container space | Minimum charges, origin and destination CFS fees, consolidation schedule |
| FCL ocean freight | Larger orders or cargo better kept in a dedicated container | Container suitability, loading, drayage, unloading and empty return |
Do not select a mode using weight alone. A light shipment can occupy substantial space, while a dense shipment can encounter handling or loading constraints. Fragility, packaging and delivery urgency may matter as much as volume.
A split shipment can also make sense: send enough urgent stock by air to bridge a shortage, with the balance by sea. Compare the extra documentation and clearance costs against the shortage you are trying to prevent.
What is included in a China-to-USA freight quote?
Build a comparison sheet with four sections: China origin charges, international carriage, US destination charges and conditional charges. Keep import duties and other government charges in a separate section so that transportation prices remain comparable.
Origin charges may include factory collection, export handling, documentation and packing. International carriage should identify the mode, routing and included surcharges. Destination charges may include terminal or CFS handling, brokerage, delivery and an appointment. Conditional items can include examinations, storage, waiting time, extra handling and redelivery.
An all-in rate is only useful when its scope is defined. Ask what happens if the final measured volume differs from the booking, the cargo misses its planned departure, or the receiver cannot unload on arrival. Confirm the quote's expiry and the event that fixes the rate, such as booking acceptance or departure.
A worked cost example for a small commercial shipment
Assume a shipment of 1,000 non-restricted items, with a purchase price of USD 20,000, moving as 8 CBM of LCL cargo to a commercial warehouse. The following figures are invented for budgeting instruction; they are not current freight rates or a tariff assessment.
Comparison table · Scroll horizontally on smaller screens
| Cost component | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| Goods | USD 20,000 |
| China collection and export handling | USD 450 |
| Ocean freight and stated surcharges | USD 900 |
| US CFS and destination handling | USD 650 |
| Brokerage and agreed documentation services | USD 200 |
| Delivery to the receiving warehouse | USD 550 |
| Cargo insurance | USD 100 |
| Total before import duties and government fees | USD 22,850 |
The logistics component is USD 2,850, or USD 2.85 per item. The pre-duty goods-plus-logistics figure is USD 22.85 per item. You still need to add applicable duties, government fees and any product-specific costs to build a full landed-cost estimate.
If a different quote includes the ocean leg for USD 600 but adds USD 1,100 in destination handling, it is not automatically better. Recalculate the same full journey. Also distinguish an internal contingency reserve from a fee that a provider will definitely charge.
How long does shipping from China to the USA take?
The useful question is not only how long the vessel or aircraft travels. It is how long it takes from cargo-ready status to inventory available at your warehouse. That period includes origin collection, waiting for departure, international transit, release, destination handling and final delivery.
Route-level estimates change with service and conditions; even a published transit range is not a delivery guarantee. Freightos maintains a China-to-US route guide that separates ocean, air and express options and highlights the effects of origin, shipment size and timing. Use a named service's current schedule for the final booking decision. Freightos: China-to-US shipping guide
Here is a planning example, not a route forecast: two days for pickup and origin handling, four days waiting for departure, 18 days of main transit, four days for destination availability and release, and two days for delivery produce a 30-day plan. If a quote advertises only the 18-day leg, it is describing a different interval.
Ask the forwarder to identify the start and end of every transit estimate. For LCL, ask when the cargo is expected to become available after deconsolidation. For inland destinations, include the rail or truck leg and warehouse appointment rather than stopping at the first US port.
Select the US gateway around your final destination
A California gateway can look attractive on the ocean schedule but may require a substantial inland move for an East Coast customer. An East Coast or Gulf arrival may change the ocean journey but reduce the remaining distance. Neither option is universally cheapest or fastest.
Compare origin pickup, carrier routing, destination handling, inland delivery, inventory timing and disruption exposure. A transloading plan also changes who handles the goods and how they are packed for the final leg. If the receiver has strict delivery windows or unloading constraints, include those requirements before choosing the gateway.
Prepare the importer and product information early
Confirm the importer of record, customs broker arrangement, importer identification, any required bond and the product's admissibility before the cargo moves. Hiring a broker does not transfer the importer's underlying responsibility for accurate entry information and applicable charges. CBP: Tips for new importers and exporters
The product record should include an accurate description, materials, use, origin and supporting technical details. Review classification and applicable additional measures against the current US Harmonized Tariff Schedule and relevant agency instructions. Do not apply one headline “China tariff” to every product or assume that routing through another country changes origin.
For vessel cargo, arrange Importer Security Filing responsibilities before loading. CBP states that eight ISF data elements are generally required no later than 24 hours before loading onto the vessel destined for the United States; other elements and particular shipment situations have their own rules. Treat the forwarder's earlier documentation cutoff as an operational deadline, not as something to ignore until the legal limit. CBP: When to submit ISF
